Gender in "The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde"

In “Jekyll and Hyde,” I presented a case where I incorporated the theme of masculinity throughout characters when it came feuds between characters as well. This also came with the abrupt content of characters feeling somewhat overwhelmed with each other. Although this may be true. The importance of reputation was crucial in this society today. If you think about it, reputation was a key factor in that time era being that you had to figure out who to trust in that day in age. Along with that fell the hardships of friendship, meaning that if you could not trust one another then why even have them in your life at all? TI believe this falls into more of the masculinity aspect of the story because men in this day in age were supposed to be thought of as more “higher up” in society. In the “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde,” the main character is a doctor and that the thought of a doctor being a woman was completely absurd. Thinking of this more in depth with this time era, men seemed to be the only ones able to rule the world and be a complete disaster in disguise.

Thinking about Jekyll’s personality traits, you would be known to say that Dr. Jekyll portrays a more feminine and allowing more masculine side to his being while also keeping one side hidden while another is shown out in the public. This goes back to the importance of reputation. Jekyll wants to be respected and shown to be more of a “public figure” in a way, and when talking about feminine attributes, this is how majority of women today feel like. Loads of women want to be showed off and displayed to the world with amazing qualities such as nice bodies, skin and the thought of knowing people were behind them through every step of the way even when tabloids would portray them as something they were not. Therefore, Jekyll is so important in this story because he portray both ends of the spectrum of masculinity and feminist attributes.
