Analysis of Death by Landscape

This story has a lot of meaning that is presented throughout it. Along with that, it also shows much heartbreak and loss, maturing of characters and the loss of oneself. This story follows the life of Lois which shows her experience with Camp Monitou which is of course out in the woods. In the story, Lois has a strong friendship with a woman named Lucy who vanishes deeper into the story. The loss of Lois’s friend had the potential from going from bad to worse when it comes to personal impact. The connection to the woods and some of the art work that Lois bought have been presented to show her confusion as to why she still fears the wilderness. I look at the paintings as a symbolic sign to grieve with the loss that was presented early in the story.

While Lois blames herself for the incident that has happened, I feel there is much more to just this loss that results from the root of the problem. And if there is not any more to this, then

the connections of the wilderness and her self-pity shows numerous metaphors when it comes to the expression of sadness and sorrow. I mean, the title of the story is “Death by landscape,” with the landscape initially having an impact as to why she was afraid of the wilderness in the first place. The title also represents that the author herself is reminding the reader that the wilderness is a harmful and dangerous place where numerous lives and actions can be lost in the blink of an eye. In the end, the author is set to make the reader feel sympathy for Lois while she cannot handle her emotions very well, which in this case is why she relates the wilderness and the loss of Lucy and her husband in such an intricate way.
